In my house there is no shortage of sweets, well unless I start making anise and orange donuts that as soon as they smell them they fly as if they had wings. This is one of those recipes for grandmother’s homemade donuts , specifically mine, who made them with a beauty and ease that I was amazed by looking at her. It seems that I am seeing her with her apron and with her hands full of flour making the dough and then frying them. My goodness, what memories.
These fried anise donuts are usually made with lemon, but I wanted to give them my personal touch by adding orange that combines wonderfully with the anise. You can make them for breakfast or a snack or you just want to give yourself a good tribute, because when you get the fluffy donuts they are a real pleasure for the senses.
Well, I am going to explain how they are made , you will see how easy they are, although if I tell you the truth, it is even easier to eat them.

Ingredients:
- 750 gr of flour
- 150 grams of sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 sachet of yeast
- 1 orange
- 1 glass of milk
- 1/2 glass of olive oil
- 1 glass of anise
- 1 pinch of salt
- Sunflower oil for frying
Anise and orange donuts: step by step
The first thing to do is prepare the dough. Peel the orange, being careful not to remove any of the white because it is bitter. Heat the olive oil with the orange peel in a saucepan and when it begins to smoke, remove it from the heat, let it cool and reserve it.
Crack the eggs in a large bowl and add the sugar. Beat until white and increase in volume.
Add the pinch of salt, the oil (that you have fried the orange peel) strained, the milk, 4 tablespoons of orange juice, the anise and beat again. Mix half of the flour with the yeast and sift it, on top of the bowl and beat again.
You add the sifted flour, little by little, until you have a soft dough that is difficult to stir with the spoon.
Sprinkle the work surface with flour, pour the dough and work it until it is the way you like it. It should be soft to handle it well when shaping the donuts. You make a ball, cover it with a cloth and let it rest for about 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes and with floured hands, take a small portion and shape the donut. I usually make a ball, rest it on the counter and make a small hole in the center with my finger, I take it with both hands and I shape it with my fingers, although you can also make them as if it were a churrito and joining the two prongs. That as you best manage.
Fry them in plenty of hot sunflower oil. You have to leave a good separation between them because with the yeast they increase in volume. If necessary, you can add more oil so they don’t burn.
When they have gone up you turn them around. They have to be well done on both sides. And when they are golden brown, you take them out of the pan and put them on a plate with absorbent paper to remove the excess oil.
You let them warm and pass them through the sugar that you have placed on a plate.
Ala, you have finished your anise and orange donuts. Enjoy!!!
