Milk thistle is a plant that has many properties. It is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiallergic , but it also helps us to eliminate migraines, treat diabetes and reduce blood sugar levels.

In addition, it also helps to lose weight thanks to Silymarin , one of the main components of this plant.

If you want to know the cases in which you cannot consume this plant and in which we do not advise you to continue reading.

Who should not take milk thistle

Milk thistle can be extremely beneficial for our body. And it is that this product helps us reduce blood sugar, treat inflamed urinary tract and much more.

However, the consumption of this plant in some cases can be harmful and it is important that you know them before starting to take it:

Below we explain the cases in which it is not advisable for the person to consume milk thistle.

Arterial hypertension

If you suffer from high blood pressure, it is not advisable to consume milk thistle since this plant has hypertensive properties , something that could worsen your condition.

If, on the contrary, you have a tendency to have low blood pressure, it can be useful for you.

You take any antidepressant medication

In case you are being treated for depression and you consume any medication of this type, you should not take milk thistle either.

This plant is not compatible with drugs of the MAOI type so it can cause the treatment to be ineffective and even cause side effects.

You are pregnant or breastfeeding

Although it is not certain that this plant has side effects in pregnant women or during lactation, it is recommended to avoid its consumption.

Also in case you want to do it, the most advisable thing to do at first would be to consult with your doctor if you can continue taking milk thistle.

You suffer from liver disease

Surely you have heard that milk thistle has beneficial properties on the urinary tract. In fact, in some cases it is used to treat possible urinary tract infections.

However, if you have any significant liver disease such as cirrhosis or hepatitis , you should avoid its consumption. Thistle could interfere with medications that help prevent this disease, causing further damage to your body.

You have or suspect diabetes

Although it is true that milk thistle has hypoglycemic properties , its consumption is not recommended in all cases of diabetes.

Think that it may have contraindications in case you are taking any medication for the treatment of this disease, so the most responsible thing is that you talk to your doctor before incorporating this product into your diet.

As you can see, despite the fact that milk thistle can have many benefits, it is important to assess our situation well before starting to consume it. Therefore, if you find yourself in any of these cases, we advise you not to do it without first consulting a medical specialist.
