Baby carrots have been positioned as an ideal snack or snack for those who take care of their health through proper nutrition . Many people even prefer them to include them as ingredients in their recipes, considering that their symmetry and beautiful appearance improves the presentation. However, this product has a dark side , so below we indicate why you should not eat them.
The origin of these carrots dates back to the eighties, when the Californian farmer Mike Yurosek looked for a solution to a typical problem of the commercialization of carrots. Traditionally, about a third of harvested carrots were wasted due to their appearance. Yurosek then devised a way to market that fraction of ugly carrots, peeling and bagging them in a process, which additionally improves their appearance.
Many are unaware of the fact that this type is not a particular variety that is available in any market. Baby carrots are simply ordinary carrots that have been peeled and carved to look symmetrical and better looking. And although offering a skinless and packed vegetable is not in itself a sin, there are other circumstances that make eating baby carrots inadvisable .
Why you shouldn’t eat baby carrots
The reasons why we do not recommend consuming this product are the following.
- The carrot has many of its main nutrients in a layer located just under the skin. The baby production process removes that layer, and with it these nutrients.
- By removing the skin of the carrot, its protective layer is removed, which makes it vulnerable to attack by pathogens such as salmonella or E.coli bacteria.
- Baby carrots are usually washed in a preservative solution before being packed. Although, after that they are rinsed in water, any residue of said solution can be toxic for some people.
Apart from the above reasons, it is clear that paying a higher price for a carrot that has a lower nutritional quality than the natural one, is not under any circumstances something logical.
