A very practical method of recycling fabrics is to make patchworrk. In this post I will show you the basic materials so that you can start in this beautiful way of taking advantage of different fabrics.
Materials to cut
A rotary cutter. It is a circular cutter, for light materials: fabric, paper, cardboard …, which greatly facilitates the work of crafts. There are several measures, the 45 mm in diameter is the most recommended to start with.
A graduated acrylic patchwork ruler. The new rules give the necessary precision to make squares, bands, triangles or any shape. They include some pads on the back of the ruler so that the fabric does not slip.
A cutting base for patchwork . It is an indispensable tool since it makes measurements, centering easier and helps when cutting with the cutter.
Scissors Perfect for cutting any type of fabric, from cotton to polyester, lycra or linen.
Ripper. Helps you quickly undo stitches flush with the fabric. They can also be used to open buttonholes and undo hems.
Marker There is a great variety of them, use the one that is easiest for you, I use the marker pen because it is clean and has a point making the mark finer.
Patchwork templates . They are very practical. It allows them to cut and draw exactly all their figures and also the measurements coincide so that when they are sewn the perfect motifs are left.
Sewing material
Pins . Ideal for holding the pieces of fabric to create your patchwork drawings.
Sewing machine . Nowadays the most comfortable thing is to use the sewing machine to join the pieces of fabric and build your patchwork work, although you can also sew them by hand.
Patchwork thimble . It allows you to push the needle without poking yourself. Use a thimble tailored to your finger.
Needles Use the ones that are for jeans as they will sew all kinds of fabrics without difficulty. The best ones to sew by hand are the three-edged one.
Quilting needle . Clover black gold, they are the best, they are strong and they slide very well. Size # 12 is the best; the shorter the needles, the easier to quilt.
Patchwork foot for the sewing machine . It makes it easier to make a narrower seam than the normal seam, for quilting there are other models, but you do not need them to start.
Threads . Basting thread, sewing thread and quilting thread. The latter is thicker and more resistant.
Iron The ones you already have at home, you can also use a small travel iron that will make it easier for you to iron your work.
