Swedish furniture chain IKEA is at the center of critics because a recent study found that some products’ prices have skyrocketed in Canada, and other review also found a similar situation in its UK locations. According to a recent report by Retail Week magazine, Ikea prices have experienced a significant increase due to rising transport costs, which have been affected by global inflation and fuel prices.

“Higher costs have affected the global economy, and like many retailers, we have had to adjust our prices to mitigate the impact to our business”, their spokesperson told Daily Hive when asked. “Price increases vary across the range and from country to country. In Canada, we continue to monitor the situation and aim to continue offering quality, sustainable home furnishings to our customers at an affordable price”, he added.

IKEA’s prices going crazy

Back in the United Kingdom, there have also been strong increases in the prices of the most popular IKEA products. “We are not immune to the macroeconomic developments that businesses, retailers, and the public are currently facing, from the increased cost of materials and transportation to the war in Ukraine and inflation,” a spokesperson from Ikea told the UK news site Metro.

Some IKEA Canada products that have experienced price hikes this year

We’ve found tens of products, sold in the Canadian locations, that now are more expensive than the last year. Here are a bunch of them.

ÅMSOSEN gel memory foam mattress

ÅMSOSEN gel memory foam mattress. Price increase: $200

This mattress (which I have already bought it once at IKEA) had one of the best value-price ratios) but went from $699 to $899 between June and September 2022.

BEKANT desk sit/stand

BEKANT desk sit/stand. Price increase: $90

This white 160×80 centimeters desk was $489 last year which, for me, was already expensive for what you get. And now, it’s sold for $589, according to IKEA Canada’s site.

BRIMNES bed frame with storage and headboard. Price increase: $110

It is one of the beds most liked by customers, because it offers storage drawers under the mattress. It also has holes to hide lamp cables and electronic devices, which makes it appear clean to the eye. Today it is sold at $609, but before September it was for $499.

BESTÅ storage combination with doors

BESTÅ storage combination with doors. Price increase: $150

This beautiful office furniture, with open shelves and elegant doors, went from $375 to $575 this year.

BEKANT, Storage unit on casters by IKEA

BEKANT, Storage unit on casters. Price increase: $115

According to the price analysis site Price Dropper, this small piece of furniture climbed from $199 to $289 in September. But, if you go directly to the IKEA Canada store you will see it even more expensive, at $314.

POÄNG armchair by IKEA

POÄNG armchair. Price increase: $30

One of its most outstanding and bestselling designs has been the POÄNG chair, but it would have to be seen if with the price increase from $89 to $119 in May 2022 it will continue to be one of the favorites of customers.

STRANDMON Armchair by IKEA

STRANDMON Armchair. Price increase: $80

Un 2021, IKEA blamed the COVID-19 for the price hoists, and now keeps blaming international situations to keep rising its prices (now that the pandemic is not as complicated for the world and the last two years). The STRANDMON chair is one of the victims of inflation. The price went from $299 to $379 from January to May 2022.
