The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has recently unveiled details regarding the upcoming Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for the year ahead. The primary objective of LIHEAP is to extend financial aid to individuals facing challenges in covering their utility expenses.

Starting from October 2, 2023, the application window for LIHEAP will remain open until August 15, 2024, or until the allocated funds are fully utilized, whichever happens first. Remember that this program works on a first come, first served basis, so qualifying applicants will receive benefits in the order in which they apply and get approved.

In the period between the year 2022 and 2023, the program had a total duration of 8 months, while in the fiscal year just started, the program will have a duration of 10.5 months. Under the Help Illinois Families Program for the 2023 program year, a substantial sum of $237 million has been earmarked for eligible families. These funds are designated to alleviate the financial burden of utility bills, encompassing costs associated with natural gas, propane, and electricity consumption.

In the State’s Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) budget, they are extending support to LIHEAP program and the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program, which will assist eligible Illinois residents in covering expenses such as utility bills, rent, temporary shelter, food, and other household essentials.
