The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has recently unveiled details regarding the upcoming Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for the year ahead. Starting from October 2, 2023, the application window for LIHEAP will remain open until August 15, 2024, or until the allocated funds are fully utilized, whichever happens first. LIHEAP Program in Illinois Will Be Extended in Time
In the period between the year 2022 and 2023, the program had a total duration of 8 months, while in the fiscal year just started, the program will have a duration of 10.5 months. Under the Help Illinois Families Program for the 2023 program year, a substantial sum of $237 million has been earmarked for eligible families. These funds are designated to alleviate the financial burden of utility bills, encompassing costs associated with natural gas, propane, and electricity consumption.
The DCEO is utilizing federal funds to aid Illinois families in accessing and affording crucial home energy assistance and essential services. In the State’s Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) budget, they are extending support to LIHEAP program and the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program, which will assist eligible Illinois residents in covering expenses such as utility bills, rent, temporary shelter, food, and other household essentials.
Applying for LIHEAP Benefits: How to Do It Easy and Fast
The Help Illinois Families initiative has introduced an online Request for Services form, streamlining the process for individuals and families to seek assistance through LIHEAP and/or CSBG programs, offering a quicker and more convenient way to access support. Remember that assistance is contingent on funding availability, and completion of the provided form does not guarantee immediate assistance.
