Wyoming residents who are struggling with high property taxes may have some relief coming their way. AARP Wyoming is encouraging those with household incomes that don’t exceed 125% of their county or statewide median income to consider applying for the Property Tax Refund Program this spring. This program allows for a refund of up to 75% of their 2022 Property Tax Bill, with some limitations, thanks to House Bill 99, which was passed by the Legislature and signed by Governor Mark Gordon.

According to Department of Revenue Director Brenda Henson, the application for property tax refunds went live on April 1 and can be obtained by calling The State Revenue Department office, going online to WPTRS.wyo.gov, or from your local county treasurer’s office. Those who wish to apply must do so by June 5 in order to be eligible for a refund for the 2022 tax year.

To be eligible for the Property Tax Refund Program, taxpayers must complete an application certifying that they own their home. Also, they must have been a Wyoming resident for the past five years, and provide proof that 2022 property taxes have been paid in full. They must also have had a household income in 2022 equal to or less than 125% of the median household income for their county or the statewide median income, whichever is greater.

Other requirements include personal assets that do not exceed $150,000 per adult household member. However, the value of the home, a car for each adult household member, and any retirement accounts can be excluded from this limit. If a household’s total property tax bill exceeds more than 10% of their total household income, then this asset limit would not apply.

AARP Wyoming State Director Sam Shumway praised the Legislature’s efforts to offer property tax relief, saying, “We’ve seen property values skyrocket in recent years and that has led to higher property taxes. That has been difficult for some of our older adults who live on fixed incomes.”

There Are Other Property Tax Exceptions in Wyoming
