How to apply for the SSDI benefits

The application can be made online, using this official website, and the entire process can take between 3 and 5 months to be approved. You can also call the toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment that will last one hour. Materials will be sent to you beforehand to start the application. You can go with a lawyer or another companion to help you with the procedure.

For the process, you will need to provide the Social Security number, date and place of birth, the names, addresses and phone numbers of doctors, social workers, hospitals and clinics that treated you and the dates of the visits, as well as the names and doses of all the medications you take.

If applicable, you may also be asked for medical records from doctors, therapists, hospitals, clinics and social workers, and laboratory results and medical tests. To verify that you have made the appropriate Social Security contributions, bring a summary of the places where you worked and the type of job you performed.

All this must be accompanied by a completed copy of the most recent Form W-2 (wage and tax return), or if you are self-employed, federal tax return for the previous year.
