The last of the four rounds of SSDI payments is arriving tomorrow: you're about to get your check or deposit.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) steps in to offer a reliable source of income to individuals facing disabilities that hinder their ability to work for a year or more. To access these benefits, applicants must have worked in jobs covered by Social Security, thereby accumulating the necessary work credits. The number of work credits required depends on the applicant’s age at the time they became disabled.

Aside from work credits, the nature of the disability itself plays a crucial role in determining eligibility for the SSDI benefits. The disability must be severe enough to prevent the individual from working for a minimum of one year or resulting in death. Once you are approved to receive the payments, you will be placed in one of the four groups that receive the deposits or checks on the day that the Social Security Administration defines.

SSDI payments in August 2023: Last round to be sent in less than a week

Three groups of beneficiaries have already received their payments by this time in August, since the payments are distributed in a defined way. If you have been receiving SSDI benefits since May 1997 or earlier, your payment is due on the third day of each month, in this case, August 3. But, if your birthday is between the 1st and the 10th of any month, your payment has been sent on the second Wednesday of August.

The third group of beneficiaries are those whose birthdays fall between the 11th and the 30th of any month. They saw the money appear in their accounts or the check in their mailboxes on August 16th. The last group is the ones who are looking forward to their money: they are those who have birthdays between the 21st and the 31st of any month, and they are the ones who will receive the last round of SSDI payments on August 23rd.

Will there be two SSI payments in September?

Your Supplemental Security Income (SSI, not the same as SSDI, don’t get confused) payments for 2023 will continue to be issued on the first day of each month, unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday, which is the case multiple times in 2023. The occurrence of two benefit payments in September 2023 is a result of the payment schedule aligned with the beneficiary’s birthdate and the special arrangement for SSI recipients when the first day of the month coincides with a weekend. This is why you will receive two payments in September: one on the 1st of September, and another on the 29th of September, which is technically for the month of October.

This does not mean that you will receive an extra payment, or a thirteenth deposit, but simply that the October payment is being advanced. By the end of 2023, you will have received a total of 12 payments, and no more than that.

How to apply for SSDI benefits: Discover if you qualify

To qualify for SSDI benefits, you must meet specific criteria established by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Firstly, you must have a disabling medical condition expected to last at least one year or result in death, as determined by the SSA’s medical guidelines. Secondly, you need to have earned a sufficient number of work credits by working and paying Social Security taxes, with the exact requirement depending on your age when you become disabled. Additionally, your income plays a role; if you earn above a certain threshold, you may not be eligible for SSDI benefits.

Finally, you must be under 67 years old to qualify for SSDI, as benefits automatically convert to retirement benefits once you reach this age. It’s essential to note that each case is assessed individually by the SSA, and for personalized information on your eligibility, it’s advisable to contact the Social Security Administration or consult with a disability attorney. It’s recommended to go to the official SSA website, where there’s a specific section about the disability benefits you could apply for.
