Financial crime is on the rise in western Washington, and Everett detectives have issued a dire warning about a new type of threat. According to the Everett Police Department, “Bluetooth overlay skimmers” are becoming increasingly common and pose a significant risk to shoppers at the self-checkout kiosks or stations. And most supermarkets and retailer chains may be in jeopardy.
These devices are specifically designed to be placed on top of Ingenico-brand card readers found in store self-checkout lanes. They are engineered to not only steal the card data when a customer swipes, but also record their PIN using a PIN pad overlay. The danger posed by these skimmers is compounded by their Bluetooth component, which allows thieves to acquire stolen data wirelessly via virtually any Bluetooth-enabled device.
What the Criminals Can Get From Your Credit Card at the Self-Checkout Stations
It all means that they can access your information without ever having to physically interact with the card terminal. And that’s actually dangerous for your personal data and, furthermore, your money. Because, by copying the card’s metadata, they can create a similar version of this to shop or move money illegally.
To protect yourself, police are urging the public to remain vigilant and take several simple actions. By doing so, you won’t become in the next victim of the new modus operandi of the scammers. First, inspect the Point of Sale device carefully, and even give it a firm tug to check for any overlaid components. They might be really small, but you’ll easily find them with your hands.
Always cover your PIN when entering it, as these skimmers are specifically designed to capture it. Whenever possible, use an ATM inside a bank during business hours. Many skimmers have been found on ATM machines outside certain banks, but also to their stuff at the self-checkout stations in supermarkets.

Set up account text and email alerts to notify you regularly when purchases are made over a certain dollar amount. Keep a close eye on your credit and debit activity online, confirming and verifying charges as they appear.
If you suspect fraud, contact the number on the back of your card. Beware of fake online sites that scammers have set up to deceive victims. If you do become a victim of fraud, it is important to file a police report immediately. No matter the amount, you should immediately get in contact with your bank to block your card, until it’s determined how mucho money was extracted.
