A one-time tax rebate is now available to certain residents of Virginia, with distribution to eligible taxpayers underway. The office of Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has recently announced that these rebates will be disbursed over the course of the next three weeks.
Recipients can anticipate receiving their tax return either in the form of a mailed check or through direct deposit into the account they utilized for their tax filing. The amount of the rebates is contingent on your filing status, with individuals eligible for up to $200, and joint filers up to $400. These rebates were integrated into the state budget, which was signed into law last month.
What You Need to Know About the 2023 Tax Rebate in Virginia
If you meet the necessary requirements and submitted your tax return before July 1, we are obligated to issue your tax rebate no later than November 30. However, we anticipate that the majority of rebates will be distributed by early November.
To qualify for the rebate, you must have filled your 2022 individual income tax return by November 1. You can explore various options for filing by visiting our Individual Income Tax Filing section. If you have already submitted your 2022 tax return, there is no further action required on your part.
Not all taxpayers are eligible. If you had a tax liability in the previous year, you may receive up to $200 if you filed as an individual, or up to $400 if you filed jointly. Tax liability is the amount of taxes you owe over the course of the year, after accounting for any applicable credits (such as the earned income tax credit or credits for taxes paid to another state), deductions, or subtractions.
You can check your eligibility using our rebate lookup tool. If you still have questions about your eligibility, get in touch with the Virginia Department of Taxation at their official website.
To determine your eligibility, you must use the tool with your Social Security Number or ITIN number, as well as your ZIP code to know exactly where you live, and that you are within the zip codes covered by this tax return. Some taxpayers will receive the rebate by direct deposit and some will receive a paper check, depending on the personal preference of every individual.
If you’ve relocated within the past year and currently have a forwarding request with USPS, your check will be sent to your new address. However, we are unable to modify your bank account details. If your bank account, previously used for receiving your Virginia refund via direct deposit, is no longer active, your rebate will be sent to you as a paper check through the mail.
